As the number of bariatric surgeries increases each year, bariatric surgeons become more competitive … and creative. I just stumbled across a video on YouTube from a surgeon who provides Lap-Band surgery in Mexico. Then I noticed that several more weight loss surgery centers are doing the same thing, creating commercials / infomercials to promote their centers.
I cannot fault these advertisers. After all, you have to get the word out somehow. But I worry that weight loss surgery might become glamorized in the future, with sleek brochures and ads, celebrity testimonials, etc.
If you are considering bariatric weight loss surgery, it’s absolutely essential that you get all the facts and look at the big picture. That’s the entire purpose of this website — to present you with all sides of the story, the pros and cons, the benefits vs. risks, etc.
Our weight loss surgery quiz is a great place to start with such research!

I just stumbled across a very informative article (technically a Q&A) written by Dr. Andrew Weil. You probably recognize the name, as Dr. Weil has written many books on health and nutrition, and appears on TV regularly.
His article is about nutrition after weight loss surgery (in this case gastric bypass). Specifically, it explains how you need to optimize your nutrition after weight loss surgery by taking vitamin and mineral supplements, increasing your iron intake, etc.
Here’s an excerpt:
“Because your body will have difficulty absorbing certain nutrients after the surgery, you will also need to take vitamin and mineral supplements daily. Caroline Apovian, M.D., director of the Nutrition and Weight Management Center at Boston Medical Center, tells me that you’ll need a daily chewable multivitamin plus additional calcium and vitamin D.”
