What Does Lap Band Slippage Mean?

Adjustable gastric bands (a.k.a. Laparoscopic adjustable bands, or Lap Bands) are a popular form of weight loss surgery these days. With this type of bariatric surgery, an adjustable band, usually made of silicon, is placed around an upper portion of the stomach. This reduces the stomach’s capacity, which results in lower food consumption and eventual weight loss.

Occasionally, these bands will slip from where they were originally placed. This is often referred to as Lap Band slippage or banding slippage. As you might imagine, the degree of slippage determines the severity of the results. Minor Lap Band slippage may reduce the effectiveness of the band while causing no ill effects. More significant slippage, however, may cause obstructions within the stomach, thus requiring urgent surgery to replaced the slipped band.

Is Lap Band Slippage Rare or Common?

Unfortunately, at this time there’s not much data on the frequency (or rarity) of Lap Band slippage in post-surgery patients. As this surgery increases in popularity and longevity, there will certainly be more data available on the frequency of Lap Band slippage in patients, and you can sure that we will cover it on this website.
