The Des Moines Register just did a story on the LAP-BAND® surgical procedure. It focuses on how the Lap-Band procedure typically has fewer complications (and costs less) than a full gastric-bypass surgery.
They also share the story of a Lap-Band surgery patient (and diabetic), his reasons for having the surgery, his post-op recovery process, etc.
An excerpt:
Eibes [the weight-loss surgeon in this story] also has performed close to 400 gastric bypass procedures, but he expects an increasing number of patients will opt for the less risky Lap-Band version. By this summer, he expects 85 percent of his surgeries to involve the Lap-Band.

The LAP-BAND® System has gotten a lot of publicity lately. This type of surgery involves an adjustable band that is placed around the stomach, creating a small upper section of the stomach. This reduces the amount of food a person can eat before feeling full. [glossary entry]
