The Lap Band Surgery Option

One of the most popular forms of bariatric surgery in Alabama and elsewhere in the U.S. is the Lap Band surgery. There's a good chance you've seen this product on television, or heard about it on the radio, because the makers of this device to quite a bit of advertising.

The formal name for this product is the LAP-BAND® System, though the procedure itself is commonly referred to as Lap Band surgery. This is actually one of two gastric banding options available to patients in Alabama and elsewhere. The other device / procedure is called the REALIZE™ Band, and it's made by a Johnson and Johnson company.

Though these gastric banding devices are made by different companies, they perform similar functions. In fact, the description part of the FDA approval letter says the same thing for both products: "The band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small pouch that can hold only a small amount of food."

Within the United States, the Lap Band has been in use longer than the Realize Band. That seems to be the primary reason why it's more popular among Alabama weight loss surgery patients. They are more familiar with the product name.

So basically, these gastric banding products reduce the amount of food the patient can consume after surgery. It segments the stomach into two areas, and the smaller / upper portion is what results in decreased food consumption and (subsequently) weight loss. It's also important to note that these procedures are reversible because the bands can be removed.

Gastric Bypass Surgery in Alabama

They are basically two main types of bariatric surgery in Alabama and elsewhere in the United States — the banding options mentioned above, and the gastric bypass procedure. One of the benefits of the Lap Band and the Realize Band is that they reversible procedures. The same cannot be said of the bypass surgery.

On the other hand, the results achieved through an Alabama gastric byass are typically more significant (faster weight loss) than the results of a banding procedure. With that being said, the results of the bypass surgery are typically more signficant as well. In most cases, patients experience more rapid weight loss with this procedure than with banding.
