State Information >> Ohio Ohio Bariatric Surgery - Lap Band & Other Weight Loss OptionsA patient's guide to bariatric weight-loss surgery in the Ohio area. Information about Lap-Band procedures, gastric bypass and other forms of bariatric surgery. Weight loss surgery has become increasingly popular over the last decade or so. But it's still surgery, so it needs to be researched carefully. If you are considering a bariatric procedure in Ohio (such as Lap-Band or bypass surgery), this article is a good jumping-off point for your further research. Your Weight Loss Surgery OptionsIf you are considering a surgical procedure to help with obesity, one of the first questions you need to answer is: "Which type of weight loss surgery is right for me?" To answer this question, you need to do plenty of research and weigh the pros and cons of each type of Ohio bariatric surgery. These days, there are various forms of weight loss surgery to choose from. But most of these variations fall into one of two major categories — adjustable gastric banding or gastric bypass. Let's talk about each of these options in turn: Lap-Band & Other Gastric Banding OptionsChances are you've seen a commercial on television lately for the LAP-BAND® System. I see their ads on TV quite often. This is one of a couple gastric banding options available in the United States. The other product is the REALIZE™ Band, made by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. (a Johnson and Johnson company). Both the Lap-Band System and the Realize Band work in similar ways, and both are approved by the FDA for use within the U.S. Here is how these products work, as noted on the FDA approval letters: "The band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small pouch that can hold only a small amount of food." This description is used on the approval notes for both the Lap-Band and the Realize Band, even though they are manufactured by different companies. So basically, these gastric banding products reduce the amount of food the patient can consume after surgery. It segments the stomach into two areas, and the smaller / upper portion is what results in decreased food consumption and (subsequently) weight loss. It's also important to note that these procedures are reversible because the bands can be removed. Learn more about the Realize Band and the Lap-Band System. Gastric Bypass Surgery in OhioWhile the banding procedures mentioned above are reversible, the gastric bypass surgery is not. A full bypass is a more signficant procedure, and the typical recovery process takes longer than a gastric band procedure. With that being said, the results of the bypass surgery are typically more signficant as well. In most cases, patients experience more rapid weight loss with this procedure than with banding. Unlike placing a band around the stomach, the gastric bypass surgery achieves results by stapling off a portion of the stomach. This creates the "small pouch" effect that we talked about earlier, which decreases the amount of food a person can eat. After the procedure, the patient will feel full much quicker before, and will therefore have to eat smaller portions. This is what drives the weight loss.
