Recovery After Bariatric Surgery

Recovery times vary based on the type of bariatric weight-loss surgery you undergo. For instance, patients of LAP-BAND® System surgery usually recover faster than gastric bypass patients. Most patients remain in the hospital for at least 24 hours after bariatric surgery. Be sure to ask your doctor how long your recovery period may be.

One of the most important things to understand after bariatric surgery is how your diet must change. Immediately after bariatric surgery, your doctor will probably have you on a liquid diet (water, Jello, broths, etc.). This usually extends for the first week after bariatric surgery.

After this "all liquids" period, you will gradually transition to pureed food, soft food, and eventually regular foods. Of course, your stomach's capacity will be reduced as a result of your bariatric surgery, so you will need to eat much smaller portions than what you may be used to.
