Types of Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery (also known as weight loss surgery) is intended to help obese patients lose weight. These surgeries are performed on the stomach and/or intestines in order to modify the digestive process -- thus helping the patient lose weight.

Common types of bariatric surgery include gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band, the LAP-BAND® System and the vertical banded gastroplasty. All of these weight loss surgeries have the same basic goal. The big difference is the cost of the surgery and the potential risks.
