Insurance Coverage of Bariatric Surgery

Insurance is a top concern for people considering bariatric weight-loss surgery. The reason is obvious — bariatric surgery can be expensive. In the last question, we talked about the cost of bariatric surgery, and how it can reach upwards of $30,000. So it's crucial that you find out about insurance coverage before deciding on surgery.

Insurance companies are so split on this issue that it's hard to say most do or don't cover bariatric surgery. There does seem to be a current rise in the number of companies who cover it, but it's still difficult to make generalizations.

The only way to find out if your insurance company will cover bariatric surgery is to call and ask them. If they say no, ask why (just for your own knowledge). If they say yes, ask if it's written in your policy somewhere. It they claim to cover bariatric surgery but you cannot find any mention of it within your insurance policy, it might be a good idea to get it in writing.
